DIY Holiday Gift Baskets

Gifts are always nicer when they come from the heart. Giving a personalized present to your loved ones doesn’t have to be a hassle with home made gift baskets.

Start by thinking about each particular person’s favorite things. For coffee or tea lovers, add a few different fair trade coffee/tea varieties. Top it off with a new mug filled with home made cookies.

Do you have a friend who loves to cook? Fill his/her basket with some gourmet salts, exotic spices, or a new apron. Throw in a cook book, or make a recipe book out of a pretty journal, or a beautiful box with index cards.

Spoil someone with a gift basket of organic soy candles, bath beads, potpourri and a nice lotion or new bathrobe.

Pick out a few baskets from a flea market or craft store. If the baskets are too big it will look empty, so pay attention to size. Wrap the baskets in shrink wrap, tying the top closed with a ribbon, and heat with a blow dryer.

Viola, the perfect present!

Start off your green holiday by replacing your old holiday lights with new, energy saving LED lights. Not only will it refresh your holiday decorations, but you’ll use up to 90% less energy! That translates to some serious savings on your energy bills.

Save paper by sending holiday e-cards this year, or you can order postcards with family photos. Be creative with your wrapping paper by using the Sunday comics or magazine pages. Double up on your gifts this year by wrapping your gifts in cute, reusable shopping bags.

Halloween Costumes for the Kids

Today we’re looking making costumes for Halloween. There are so many ways to make something fun, special and inexpensive for your kids, so take a look at a couple of our ideas below:

Skeleton Costume: sticky black plastic, black and white paint, a couple of safety pins, black clothes and some cardboard. After you’ve drawn the bones and rib cage onto the black plastic, cut them out carefully. Put on your black clothes, place the white bones carefully on your body then paint your face! You’re ready to scare!

Or what about a witch’s outfit? You can have it in black, orange, green or even purple. With a black t-shirt and a frilly or puffed skirt, all you will need are the traditional witch accessories – a black hat, magic wand and a broomstick!

You can make a wand out of a stick, painted black or another color, and decorate it with ribbons, a star or a feather at the top. You can make a hat with black felt or cardboard, or pick one up cheaply in a local store. And as for the broomstick – go and look in the cupboard!

Your daughter will love it.

Conservative Never Looked So Cool

I recently read a review of the 2011 MTV Music Video Awards which congratulated the network, performers and guests for this year’s more conservative, simplistic platform and behavior.

While performers like Lady Gaga and Chris Brown, wowed and impressed the crowd and viewers with their chart topping songs and creative choreography, their performances received acclaim for the simplistic approach. Some even said it was refreshing to see celebrities tone down the drama and extravagance.

It seems like in these scary, uncertain times, even celebrities have started promoting conservatism and sustainability. I applaud this cultural shift and the celebrities who, conscientiously or unconscientiously, set a leading example.

This helps us reinforce conservation and sustainability across the board. Whether you start a recycling program in your neighborhood or donate reusable water bottles to your office water cooler, follow this year’s trend and make conservative and sustainable actions look cool in your life.

Holy Summer Hurricanes, East Coast

Since the outbreak of Hurricane Irene, we have been working tirelessly to help people clear the water from their homes. Our phones are ringing off the hook, all day, with people desperate for flood relief and water damage services. We continue to work our hardest to create a safe, stable and clean living environment for all East Coasters affected by the hurricane. We’re like Batman whooping into save the distressed New York victims of Irene.

As Hurricane Irene continues to cause damages, problems and stress throughout the east coast, we remind you to stay safe because we’re not out of the weeds yet.

As electricity starts coming back in homes and offices, remember to stay clear of rooms with any level of standing water present. Beware of electrocution in your damaged home. Loose power lines and water create fatal environments for humans and animals.
