Green Carpet Cleaning Tips

Carpet remains the American public’s first choice of flooring – but many people argue that it’s not a healthy or environmentally-friendly kind of flooring. Admittedly, tiles or hardwood are easier to clean, and don’t pick up the dust, mites, and dander carpet does. But you don’t have to give up on carpet, particularly if you adopt a ‘green’ approach…

  • When buying a new carpet, choose one made of a natural fiber (wool, jute etc) – it’s more eco-friendly.
  • Make sure the carpet is tacked down with tack strips (not adhesives) – you’ll be cutting down on VOC emissions.
  • Ask the company installing your carpet if they will recycle it, at the end of its lifespan. This will save energy, oil and landfill waste.
  • Always use environmentally-friendly products when cleaning your carpet. These are free from toxic chemicals, as well as leaving behind no sticky residues.
  • When your carpet has been installed, air out the room for 48-72 hours, by leaving windows open and run the a/c. This will help get rid of the chemical vapors in the air.
