1. Remove Dirt Thoroughly

   Dirt is the number one cause of premature damage and fading of your carpet, so vacuum your carpet frequently and thoroughly.

2. Remove Stains As Soon As Possible

   If you notice a stain, take action as soon as possible. Most stains can be treated, as long as they are handled immediately. The longer you leave it, the more difficult it is to remove.

3. Test a Patch

   Every carpet is different. Before attempting to clean it, test a patch to see how it reacts. Certain types of cleaners may be too harsh to use, causing loss of color and/or texture.

4. Start with the Mildest Spot Agent

   When using spot agents, always begin with the mildest. Unless necessary, try not to use spotting agents at all. If necessary, always neutralize high alkaline or high acid cleansers after use.

5. Scrape the Spot

   It is not recommended to dig at or brush spots. Instead, scrape the spot towards its middle and then dampen it with a white towel or cloth, using a brush.

6. Don't Over-Use Chemical Agents

   Although it's tempting, never over-use shampoos, spot-removal agents, and other cleaning chemicals. Too much use of any cleaning agent will result in residue, and may also bleach the carpet of its colour.

7. Blot It

   If the spot on your carpet is wet, don't rub it. Instead, blot it. Rubbing a spot spreads the stain. If the spot is dry, loosen and vacuum away excess dirt before moistening. Always rinse thoroughly, as a left-over cleaning product may cause the cleaned area to attract more soil.

8. Rotary Scrubbing

   Rotary scrubbing works best when cleaning carpets, cleaning fibers by encapsulating dirt and detergent residue.

9. Wait Until Dry

   If you are not satisfied with the results of your cleaning, wait until your carpet is dry before trying another product. Do not apply a coat of carpet protector. The dirt will simply glue itself to the carpet and make it harder to remove, next time you clean it.

10. Don't Mix Your Own Chemicals

    Whatever you do, do not attempt to mix your own cleaning chemicals. Recently, a 53-year old woman nearly died from inhaling the fumes of her own mix of bleach and an over-the-counter liquid cleaner.

11. Do Not Use Water That Is Too Hot

    Do not clean carpets or furniture with water that is too hot. With the rise of the environmental movement, we now know that the hotter the water used, the more energy is wasted. Anyway, it is actually possible to clean a carpet with cold water. Give it a try.

12. Research the Problem

    Use disinfecting chemicals to eliminate micro-organisms trapped in the carpet. Research exactly what the problem is before choosing a disinfectant. Remember that bacterides kill vegetative micro-organisms, sporocides destroy spores, viricides kill viruses, and fungicides eliminate fungi.

13. Dust Mites

    Dust mites live in every carpet and can often run into the millions. Use a contracted cleaner to eliminate them – it is the only way to keep you indoor environment as allergen-free as possible.

14. One Insect – One Big Problem

    Lice and scabies trapped in your carpet and upholstery can spread. If you notice this problem, do not attempt to deal with it alone. Call a professional immediately. It's the only way to make sure they don't spread throughout your entire family.

15. Divide and Rule

    When vacuuming wall-to-wall carpeting, divide the floor into quadrants and vacuum in sections. Add baking soda to your vacuum bag - it kills odors very effectively.

16. Specific Areas

    Areas where people sit and move their feet around are usually areas that require special attention.

17. An Ice Cube

    To remove any 'dents' from your carpet - as a result of furniture indentation – place an ice cube in the necessary area. Once the ice has melted, let the affected area dry and then vacuum. This will help the carpet return to its former shape.

18. Keep Dirt Outside

    To help keep your carpet cleaner, try to prevent outdoor dirt from getting inside your home. Use doormats and boot scrapers and sweep the sidewalks, steps and stairwells leading to your home regularly.

19. Club Soda to the Rescue

    Club soda can generally remove red wine stains. Treat the stain as quickly as possible for effective results.

20. Enzyme Products

    Enzyme products are best used for pet stains and odors. You can find such products at the store.

21. WD-40 - Oil it Up!

    Gum removal can easily become a sticky problem. Try spraying WD-40 on it.

22. Wax Problem? There is a Solution

    It is actually possible to remove wax from surfaces. Scrape as much as you can out of the carpet with a credit card or butter knife. Then place several layers of paper towels over the remaining wax, and apply a warm iron. This should draw the wax out. If the paper towels become saturated, replace them with a fresh layer.
