Renew Your Living room

Maintaining a clean home is important and it starts with immaculate upholstery.

Your upholstery gets dirty as a part of everyday life: food or drink stains, dirty feet and hands, pet soiling, and many others.

These factors can result in the premature fading and soiling of your upholstery, but you can also prevent furniture dullness with the following helpful tips.

First - Check the Fabric Content

The first thing you should do before anything else is to check the fabric content. This can be obtained from your manufacturer.

After the fabric content has been established, you should do a spot test in a somewhat inconspicuous area to ensure there will be no damage or discoloration to the surface. Then just use our upholstery cleaning tips to keep your home looking its best.

Butter Stains

With butter, your best bet is to use a dry cleaning solvent, found at any grocery or retail store. Apply a little solvent to a clean, white cloth and blot the stain.

After, mix a tablespoon of a mild, ph-balanced detergent with a cup of warm water and blot the stain again. Using a separate towel, sponge the residual solvent and detergent off with warm water. Keep off the area until dry.

Cheese Stains

For any kind of oily, cheese stain you can use the same mild, ph-balanced detergent as with a butter stain.

Mix it with one cup of warm water. Blot the stain with a clean, white towel. Mix a tablespoon of ammonia with a half cup of water and blot the stain again. Using a separate towel, sponge the residual solvent and detergent off with warm water. Keep off the area until dry.

Ink Stains

Ballpoint pens are the worst culprit in these situations, but even these stubborn stains can be removed with a little time and patience. There are a few options for removing ink stains, but it is important to remember with all of them that you should only blot:

  • Using a clean, white towel sprayed with hairspray, dab at the stain. Follow up with blotting the stain with a separate clean towel.
  • Dab a bit of isopropyl rubbing alcohol onto a clean, white towel and blot the stain. Again, follow up with blotting with a separate clean towel.
  • Apply some nail polish remover or acetone to a clean, white towel. Blot from the outside of the stain to the inside. Follow up with blotting the stain with a separate clean towel.
  • Apply spirits of turpentine to a clean, white towel and blot the stain. Follow up with blotting with a separate clean towel.
  • The best commercial products to use on ink stains are Carbona or Afta. Use them with a clean, white towel and blot as directed above. Coffee Stains

Using the same mixture as above, of a tablespoon of mild, ph-balanced detergent and a cup of warm water, blot the stain from the outside in, with a clean, white towel. Then, mix 1/3 cup of white wine vinegar with 2/3 cups of water and blot at the stain. Using a separate towel, sponge the residual solvent and detergent off with warm water. Keep off the area until dry.

Water Stain on Leather Upholstery

Wet the entire section to a seam or edge. Soak a brand new sponge in a bowl of tepid water. Wring it out to get it as dry as possible.

Start at the exact location of the water stain, dampening the leather until you reach the edges of the cushion. Wet the leather less as you move further away from the water stain. Do not scrub. Condition the leather after it has dried.

Other liquid stains can be treated in the same manner, however, leather can be tricky and in many cases it is best to seek professional treatment.

Choose the Right Cleaning Materials

Furniture can be an expensive item, and you can permanently damage it if you use the wrong cleaning materials.

Cleaning your upholstery regularly is extremely important to maintaining its beauty. Dust and dirt settles into fabric very quickly and can become a problem if not dealt with early on.

We recommend vacuuming your upholstery every two months with the appropriate attachment to keep it looking its best. If you are not sure about how to clean your furniture, it may be best to call a professional cleaner. You can also purchase upholstery protectors to protect your furniture against future stains.

Deodorize Regular Basis

It is also important to deodorize your upholstery on a regular basis. Odors can be tough to remove, and the smell can make using your furniture an unpleasant experience. Deodorizers which use enzymes to destroy odor caused by urine or other materials can be purchased from specialty stores.

These products will give your furniture and upholstery a pleasant scent.
