- Dirt is the #1 cause for premature damage and fading of your carpet so vacuum your carpet frequently and thoroughly.
- If you have a stain, treat it as soon as possible. Most stains are treatable as long as they are handled right away. The longer you wait to treat a stain, the more difficult it is to remove.
- Every carpet is different. Before attempting to clean any carpet, test a patch to see how it reacts. Certain types of cleaners may be too harsh for your carpet and usage may cause loss of color and/or texture.
- When using spot agents, start with the mildest. Unless it is necessary try not to use spotting agents at all. If necessary always neutralize high alkaline or high acid cleansers after use.
- It’s not recommended to dig or brush spots. Instead, scrape the spot towards the middle and then tamp the spot into the white towel or cloth using a brush. You can even use a meat tenderizer.
- Although it’s tempting, never overuse shampoos, spotter, and other cleaning chemicals. Too much of any cleaner will result in residue and may bleach the color out of the carpet.
- If the spot on your carpet is wet, don’t rub it, blot it. Rubbing a spot spreads the soil. If the spot is dry, loosen and vacuum away excess dirt before moistening. Always rinse thoroughly, left over cleaning product may cause the cleaned area to attract soil.
- Rotary scrubbing works best when cleaning carpets because it cleans the fibers by encapsulating dirt and detergent residue.
- If you are not satisfied with the results after you have cleaned your carpet, wait until it is dry before trying another product. Do not apply a coat of carpet protector. This will result in the gluing of the dirt to the carpet and make it harder to remove next time you clean it.
- Whatever you do, do not attempt to mix your own cleaning chemicals. Recently there was a case of a 53 year old woman who nearly died from inhaling the fumes of her own mix of bleach with an over-the-counter liquid cleaner.
- Do not clean carpets or furniture with water that is too hot Due to recent environmental movements activists are pushing towards the end of cleaning with hot water due to energy waste. It is possible to clean a carpet with cold water, especially when powered by the motivation to save the environment. Give it a try.
- Disinfecting chemicals are used to eliminate microorganisms trapped in the carpet. Research exactly what the problem is before choosing a disinfectant. Bactericides kill vegetative microorganisms, sporocides destroy spores, viricides kill viruses, and fungicides eliminate fungi.
- Dust mites live in every dirty carpet and may number in the millions. Using a contracted cleaner who can kill these dust mites is the only way to keep indoor environments as allergen free as possible.
- Lice and scabies trapped in your carpet and upholstery can spread. If you suspect this problem in your home, do not attempt to solve it on your own. Immediately call a professional. It only takes one insect to spread among your entire family.
- When vacuuming wall-to-wall carpeting, divide the floor into quadrants and vacuum in sections. Add baking soda to the bag in your vacuum to kill odors.
- The areas where people sit and move their feet are usually the areas that require special attention.
- To remove any dents from your carpet due to furniture, put an ice cube in it. After the ice has melted, let the affected area dry, and then vacuum. This will help the carpet return to its former shape.
- To help keep your carpet cleaner, try to prevent outdoor dirt from getting into your home. Try using doormats and boot scrapers. Sweep the sidewalks, steps and stairwells leading to your home regularly.
- Club soda can generally remove red wine stains. Treat the stain as fast as possible for best results.
- Enzyme products are best for pet stains and odor. You can find these products at most pet and marine stores.
- Gum is a piece of cake; try spraying WD-40 on it!
- Wax IS possible to get out. Scrape as much as you can out of the carpet with a credit card or butter knife. Place several layers of paper towels over the remaining wax and apply a warm iron to draw the wax out. If the paper towels become saturated, replace with a new layer.
- If you would like to steam clean your own carpet many companies rent out equipment for a reasonable price. One recommended cleaner is the Hoover V2.
- If all else fails, and your stains and odors are hopeless, call a professional. They will know how to use more powerful cleaners to remove it.
